Any contractor can put a stick of pipe in the ground, but after that pipe is covered and out of sight, it must withstand the test of decades. In order to withstand that test, underground utilities must be installed with laser precise accuracy, using advanced instruments to project grades on distant markers. Berger crews install miles upon miles of pipe every year with just that precision. These pipe sizes range from one inch to 96 inches and include water distribution, sanitary sewer, and storm sewer. Regardless of the size or type all pipe receives the same attention to detail as the next.
Underground utility installation is one of Berger's specialties; with crew capabilities ranging from open field pipe installation to complex urban reconstruction projects. With the ability to directional drill, in addition to televise and jet sewers, Berger provides a single solution for underground utility installation and reconstruction.
Berger has completed just about every kind of job with our direction drilling equipment. By staying on top of the latest technological solutions, we have the equipment and experience necessary to install the pipe right where it needs to be. Landscaping, heavily wooded areas, paved surfaces and other obstacles can remain untouched without digging at the surface. The use of directional drilling results in reduced cost, time, and disruption the surrounding area.
In this demanding field, Berger is noted for speed, safety, and uncompromised quality. Some of the specialized utility installations include the following:
- Box culverts and creak diversions
- Strom Trap storm water detention systems
- Emergency municipal main repairs
- Waste water treatment plants
- Specialized sanitary sewer reconstruction (Brick Sewer)
Sample Projects:
- The Mather (Evanston, IL) – As a subcontractor this project involved the complex reconstruction of an existing four foot diameter 100 year old brick sanitary sewer. An underground tunnel was to be installed in the location of the existing brick sanitary sewer pipe, so in order for the tunnel to be constructed the main had to be replaced with a ductile iron pipe in a steel casing. The critical issue on this project was by-pass pumping the effluence during the reconstruction of the main under the most severe winter weather conditions.
- Wauconda Treatment Plant (Wauconda, IL) – As a subcontractor this project involved constructing a new sanitary sewer treatment plant facility. We performed all the exterior underground piping including the extension of village main lines and the installation of a lift station in two separate locations.
- Walnut Glen (Island Lake, IL) – As a subcontractor on this residential subdivision we install a complete infrastructure including sanitary sewer, storm sewer, and water distribution lines. In addition to the installation of the distribution line we self performed the installation of the sanitary sewer lift station required. All this work was performed in soil conditions which were less than ideal.
