Berger prides itself on creating a safe working environment for all employees.  We believe that a safe jobsite begins with a safe and knowledgeable staff.  A comprehensive safety manual governs all employees, including specific safety procedures for various job duties.

Operating engineers and laborers receive safety training through their union apprenticeship programs.  In addition, Berger requires all employees to hold and maintain an OSHA 10 hour certification and attend company safety meetings regularly.  The Underground Contractors Association and The Lake County Contractors Association have recognized Berger with their “Annual Safety Award for the Most Man Hours Worked without Injury” several times.

Annually, Field Supervisions and Foreman gather at the company home office for a series of training seminars.  Guest speakers include insurance industry representatives, equipment suppliers, and government agency representatives; whom provide expert advice on procedures and practices.

The successes of these programs are evident by the low Workers’ Compensation Modifier, or Mod Rate, tabulated by Berger’s insurance underwriters.  A Mod Rate is an insurance benchmark that adjusts the premium paid for Workers’ Compensation Coverage, the lower the rate, the better the safety record.
